i am cooking dinner for my father, sister and husband, at my parents house tonight. my mother is out to dinner with friends, forgetting that we come to her house every thursday.
i was planning on a beef stirfry.
i realised this afternoon when we got home from work that i'd taken mince out of the freezer instead of beef strips.
so instead, a new concoction is simmering away. my sister dislikes spaghetti bolognase. so i'm making a beef pasta bake, without the bake part. hpoefully it's nice.
my father isn't home yet though. and his phone is off. so hopefully he's here in 10 minutes. especially because he's the one who thought it was a good idea we still come over, and i cook.
my parents house smells like paint. because it is being painted. but they have fast internet. so i'm happy to live with a headache for the evening.
this morning we are off to the city, to check out a venue for one of our programs. i've decided there should be a special concession where, if you catch the train to the city in peak hour, but not because you work there, you should still get off-peak prices. i'm sure if i pitch that to the government, it would be extremely well-received and quickly-implemented system.
meanwhile, in other government/transport related news, i'm not sure what to think of these 10000 fines meaning thousands of dollars and months of suspension from driving. it's interesting that for something so public, that the government won't even consider reviewing things - even when the tunnel operator is thinking it might be a good idea. some guy has set up this website. that being said, probably people just didn't see or care about any roadwork signs. speeding is still speeding, as they say. but not if you didn't know about it?
i wonder if the tunnel boycott will have an impact. apparently, tunnel traffic isn't as high as expected. just wait til they convert epping road to one lane. highway robbery!
i got fun in the mail today.
a new pair of non sweat shop shoes

and a free tshirt to go with it (in red coz they ran out of black)

the wording of the slogan means i can't really wear it to work. but to youth group, no worries!

huzzah!
after tonight's sermon i am inspired to buy fair trade, not that i wasn't before, but i think more determinedly now. i'm too much of a sucker for sales and cheap clothing - which are probably the worst places to be getting clothing if you're interested in fair trade/no sweat shops etc.
there needs to be more fair trade clothing out there, and more specifically, in australia. found some stuff on no sweat stuff and new internationalist. but there's isn't a huge range. hmm.... still searching
i am impressed with myself this morning. i find it very difficult to sleep in. always have. don't know why. but this morning i got to 10am. go team!! there was a lot of awake moments from about 7:30am, but that's ok. there were still sleepy ones too.
just rode to parentals house for a drink of water. tick off 30 minutes of exercise for today, and tonnes of sore muscles for tomorrow.
time to stretch!!
we're going iceskating tonight.
now i will be the first to admit i'm not impressed that iceskating was chosen for this terms social. it's boring, cold, boring, wet, boring, a rip off, and boring. but i'm sure it will be fun to hang out with fun people. so my attitude of negativity extends only to the venue and activity, and not the participants.
i am glad to have found a two for one deal in the entertainment book. that does lighten my mood about it all. still, $7.50 is a bit rough for two hours of sitting on the sidelines.
my car told me it was four degrees when i went to my grandparents early this morning. it says it's 12 degrees now. but four... that's a bit nippy. i love early morning autumn/winter crispness.
today is the woozy feeling day. my head is very light and heavy at the same time. it is strange. perhaps i caught my mum's coldy thing. joy. i am eating lots of vitamin c.
and for the record, i don't like parmesan cheese. it smells yucky and stank out my house last night. the sacrifices you have to make in marriage. i mean, compromise.
and i drive a manual. always have, always will. i am a man. they gave me an auto in brisbane. autos frustrate me because they aren't very good at changing gears properly. it was funny when the hire car guy asked me if i'd driven a getz before. i said yes. and he said so you know to put the clutch in as you start it. i said yep - without really thinking about whether i'd had to do that before. i didn't realise yet it was an auto. and then when i got in and it was, i wondering what the hell he was talking about the clutch for!
my second cousin, Stuart, sent me a whole heap of information about my mum's dad's (so my maternal grandpa's) side of the family, upon my request.
four of my great great great great great grandparents arrived in Australia in 1792 as convicts (give or take a few greats). go team!! and those not from england, seem to have been from scotland. so that's a little boring.
one great (times something) aunt of mine died when she was 16, the night before her wedding, by a lightning strike as she was ironing her wedding dress!
and a great (times something) grandma was 14.5 years old and 8 months pregnant when she married a man who wasn't the father.
my great (times something) grandfather was a very committed mason. and i think there was another man on the other side of the line who was a mason too (eek).
there is some distinguishedness as well. my great great great grandpa was mayor of wickham. and someone was buddies with Ben Chifley, one of our prime ministers.
it's all pretty interesting reading. Stuart put a lot of work into it all - there's letters, court transcripts, newspaper clippings, and excerpts from books.
i don't think other sides of the family will end up being so detailed, but it's a project that could go on for a while. depending on how into i get. which may or may not be much.
watched andrew denton's 'God On My Side' last night. some of it was interesting, some of it spoke truth, some of it was cringe-worthy, some of it was boring, some of it was funny, a lot of it was very american. andrew denton is good at what he does.
i think howie mentioned that there seemed only two guys in it that were more balanced than the others. i agree with that, because i pointed it out. but these other more fundamentalist guys were passionate in believing what they believe. in some ways that can be a not-so-good thing i guess. look at history.
nonetheless is was interesting viewing. made me think a bit about my faith and belief system and how that might be projected to others.
and so we came home on a 9am flight on sunday. the early morning was due to a Swans game at the SCG - there was no way I was missing it.
we had a mid morning snack at Maccas, in westfield centrepoint. and all these pretty signs were stuck on the door, mostly out of customer sight - i don't know that you can read it all that well

but it tells the workers that they need to smile and ask us customers how our day is going, to make eye contact, to get our order in 30 seconds, and to thank us and tell us to have a nice day. all part and parcel with being a maccas worker. they are also told that 2 deep is too deep (in lines) - i think thornleigh maccas might need to be reminded of that.
we walked through hyde park on our way to oxford street and centennial park

howie took some time out as we waited for dad, lachie and debs - and a man driving past stopped out of concern asking if he was alright!

the game was pretty good. the swans fought hard - mostly. also, they won because i had tipped against them. of course.

and sometimes you just have to take photos of howie and debbie

so that was our sunday back in sydney.
today is back at work.
unfortunately, my camera isn't a big fan of poor lighting. i did have one really good photo of howie looking very schmick in his suit, but i dropped my camera right after taking it, and it wiped that photo for some reason. best that than the camera completely dying!!
here we have the bridal party

and matt pratt and howie sharing a special moment

us sharing a moment

howie giving his speech in the queensland cricketers club at the GABBA

the happy couple cutting their cake - yay for jesse and marie!!

and this is what we like to see!

i didn't take a lot of photos, and i didn't take a lot of good ones. but it was a lovely wedding, and good fun seeing peoples. and being at the GABBA was tops!!!
so congratulations Jesse and Marie!! enjoy a well earned break!!!
oh yeh, an hour and half sleep just went down very well indeed. nice to be back with my pillow.
yay for the swans winning, and ruining my weekly tipping.
and hooray for being back home. i like being home. i will soon upload photos from the wedding, and the rest of our time about town.
bet there aren't many people who can say they have handed out lucky door prize tickets in the queensland cricketers club at the gabba. well, me and bowen can.
it's scary going to things where you don't really know people. like you know some, but not really well. so it's not very safe feeling, even though it's really fine. i think the arriving thing is almost scariest - where do i go, where is someone i know, what's going on.
that's how i'm feeling now. i'm sure it's not just me, but maybe i feel it more than other people. oh to be confident and outgoing!
some photos to share with you of our time so far
as you can see, everything is quite close together in our little cupboard of an apartment
but free broadband makes all things ok
this is in brisbane square, big fun metal ball things everywhere. this is my one photo in or of brisbane city
sitting in the botanical gardens, overlooking the water, just before howie discovered he'd sat in wee
on our way to a lifeline shop to buy some goodies for the bucks night, we came across this sign
howie in kaj mahal
i've had a whole night by myself in our hotel room, and NOW the internet decides to work.
i was going to blog photos from today, but now i can't be bothered. you can wait til tomorrow!
shall soon be heading out on an adventure in brisbane city. the plan is to see southbank and the city today. and then i'll bludge around tonight, maybe watch some DVDs, while howie is at the bucks. i don't think i'm brave enough to go out byt myself.
but while i wait for us to leave, i found xanadu is on foxtel. such a quality movie. well, not really, but it's from my childhood. my and my sister enjoyed some dodgy movies!
here in brisbane now. but before i begin, another thing to bitch about is that after i blogged from sydney airport, having paid $8 for a telstra hotspot connection for 30 minutes, it dropped out just after i blogged (which was about 3 minutes in) and that was annoying.
so yes, we arrived in brissie, and rang the hire car place, and were picked up and taken to the car place. we have a yellow getz called "kaj mahal". it's an auto instead of the manual i booked. which is a little annoying coz in my opinion auto eats petrol more than manual. but it's fun and yellow.
we went straight to westfield for the boys to check their outfits were ok. i wandered around. found a map of brisbane, some phone credit and met bnack up with howie. and we got a coke and a diet coke. and then back here to our tiny little room. it's so little! but free broadband, an LCD tv, a clean room, it's all good.
tonight is the wedding rehearsal after some dinner. but first it's off to woolies so we can stock our fridge.
and that is the story so far.
oh how annoying.
i'm sitting waiting just past the security stuff. we only have carry on luggage, and already got our boarding passes last night on the internet. but then, because i had to take a present from someone else up to the wedding, and because that present was a picnic set, without me knowing, we have just gone through a bunch of hassles because it has to be checked in, because of knives in it.
thanks for that people who gave it to us to take.
so we'll be delayed in brisbane too waiting for the luggage to come through on the baggage thing. when we were hoping for a quick getaway to do wedding stuff.
and good on airport for being anal. and then a bit incompetant in dealing with their anality.
i'm sure howie will share more of the story.
its a bit sleepy isn't it.
maybe with all this fog we could be hanging at the airport for a bit while they clear the backlog. but who knows. it could be fine by the time we get there. only time will tell.
and fear not fearless followers, our apartment is brisbane has free broadband internet, so we shall indeed be utilising that service!!
thanks for visiting david. should do that more often.
i do hope now to be bed time. i think i've finished packing. well, enough anyway.
off to brisvegas tomorrow we go.
we watched blood diamond tonight. this movie, like hotel rwanda and tears of the sun, made me feel sad, powerless and helpless, and rotten for being middle class and western. but it's not about me. well, it is. but it's not.
and i don't want to go into some rant that tries to help me empty my head. but this world is so so damaged. and i don't understand it. i can't imagine how God feels about it. i can't at all ever imagine what it's like for the people in the middle of it.
so that is my abbreviated rant.
it makes me not want to watch "these sort of movies", but it's probably not a bad thing to be confronted. even if i don't know what i can possibly do. or whether i really would or could do anything.
crap crap crap.
i'm off to eat saladas tonight, and get some cash monies for doing it. i'm excited to have a taste test for market research. for a while now i've only been asked to do feminine hygiene product tests. although you do get paid well for doing nothing. but free food is a good thing, even if its at crows nest.
i have RSI in my wrists from work today. i need those wrist guard things that old checkout chick ladies wear. am i have a bagillion paper cuts.
we're enjoying a relaxed night in. we made pizza, watched a DVD, played with our turtles, and here i am sitting in my flannie pj pants and a daggy jumper. this is the life.
last night was a night of strange dreams. it's so weird how you (by which i mean "i") can get emotionally tied up in dreams, not just during the dream, but so much so that i wake up, remember what happened, and have feelings about what 'happened' and then other feelings with the realisation that it didn't happen. bizarre.
i think i'm sad that parts of last nights dream didn't happen. i am glad i didn't get a parking ticket in real life though.
i have so many sore muscles. sleeping so difficult last night. my lower right back is really sore, my hands, my right forearm, other parts of my back.
i think i utilised too many strange and unused muscles gardening yesterday. but using the hedger is so much fun! the gaggle of bushes up the front, which were starting to take over the footpath and restrict anyone from finding the tap, have been controlled. they are now a hedge, somewhat. and that is fun. thanks for lending the hedger dad!
and happy mothers' day to my mother. and my mother-in-law. and my grandmothers. and nan-in-law. but particularly my mother. who is awful to buy for because she doesn't want or need anything, and tells you that, and is happier to not get anything. the thought counts. yes, but i can't wrap up a thought!!
i love you mum.
eurovision is on tonight! and damn smh coz i just saw who won. boo.
but perhaps tonight will be spent with the family. or perhaps in my bed. its a bit of a toss up.
watching the swannies not quite carve it up. i do hope we win. as at the moment, we are losing. just.
we are enjoying the company of tamara, will, debs, cathy, grant and michelle. and of too much food. but it should keep us going over the next few hours.
yay for big TV.
this arvo it was nice as we celebrated josh's 21st, this time at wahroonga. was nice to see some peoples. plus we got some cakies to take home. i was going to take photos. but i forgot. boo. although i'm sure josh's dad took enough for everyone! hehe.
this is the back of husbands new shirt.

i am claiming credit for this side. he can claim credit for the front half, but it was inspired by my back half.
if only we had something good for my shirt
this is the sort of thing that is annoying to blog.
and for the record, i'm ok with not having seen a lot of these.

i've noticed on my recent batlow royal gala apples, that besides being yum, they have advertising on the apple stickers!

as you can see, batlow must have some deal with the makers of open season.
what's with that!!
i read this morning that the safety house program finished up on March 18th.

and that people don't know that, and haven't taken down the signs, which could pose a risk to school kids who seek refuge if threatened.
apparently the program couldn't be managed well. like what stops some predator getting a sign and welcoming kiddies into their house.
but i wonder why they they suddenly decided it wasn't a good idea. and why they haven't publicized it much.
i'm still looking for something to write on my new tshirt. i'm not very good at coming up with witty things for myself, although i was the brains behind what will be on howie's shirt.
i appreciate ben's suggestion of POOPIES, but am wondering if others may like to through some options in the mix.
we celebrated 21 years of joshy tonight. there was spinach, coke, more spinach, lemon meringue, after dinner mints, embarrassing stories and presents
good job joshy turning 21. have a tops day tomorrow!!
and we had fun with sam too. forever to be known as 'touching sam'.
working for the organisation i work for has expanded my horizons. i am much more familiar with more of the sydney road network than i would ever have been if i wasn't in my job.
meanwhile, my feet have gone to the dogs. i blame uluru, but today i realised just how dry the skin is. if only i was a girl and knew how to re-moisturise them and pamper them.
good old fly buys rewards. just got us 10 movie tickets. that will be fun to be seeing at least another five movies over the coming months - particularly as i know which movies are coming out of the coming months and am excited about them! thanks fly buys.

we went to rhodes today for some IKEA, some lunch and some socrates.
we bought a new clothes horse, three $2 pot plants and a blue IKEA trolley. all for 95cents because of an IKEA voucher we still had monies on. bargain!
and in socrates we bought two tshirts with letter transfers coz they were on special. but i don't know what to write on my shirt! there are two of most letters. any ideas???
i enjoyed my yesterday. debs, howie and me ventured to the oaks to spend the afternoon with our family celebrating grandma's 80th birthday, which is on wednesday.
there were a LOT of old people. most somehow related to me, and a few just old friends of Gma's. us cousins stuck mostly with people under the age of 32. perhaps i shall introduce them to you.
four sevenths of the girls, kylie, kimberly, nat and debs
the lone boy, andrew, and me
mel and debs
in very exciting news, my cousin jo is pregnant! due 5th november. so that's very cool. isn't she looking lovely
and i'm sure she and natalie will kill me if they ever find these photos are available for the world to see!
and kaysey was very cute, as always, singing us songs and dancing and being a cute little 26 month old
the boys-in-law were like little social butterflies, as you can clearly see howie and steve demonstrating
grandma seemed to have a lovely day catching up with people. she found plenty of opportunity to be cheeky as well. she's a good sort.
we had a jolly old time with family. and had to leave early because of our full social calender.
kirri and tim's engagement party was good times. very relaxed and pretty in kirri's backyard - wonderful use of lanterns, fairylights and tea lights. it was good to hang out with peoples: cathy, grant, debs, howie, ben, steve, sam, libby, chuck, deby. and of course to celebrate with kirri and tim. tim is one of my favourite people. kirri is pretty damn good too. yay for them getting married.
and then it was home time before 11pm because we are all grandmas.
i don't understand the fashion of fashion week. i mustn't be trendy.
actually i know i'm not. whether the catwalk fashions or normal people fashions.
ah well.
there is a particular pedestrian crossing that i use virtually every day, and a few times a day at that.
and i would have to say that 70% of the time that i'm crossing, someone drives through it while i'm on the road. and at least twice i've had to stop as i'm crossing because some idiot driver doesn't stop, and would have cleaned me up if i'd kept going.
correct me if i'm wrong, but last time i looked at the road rules book, a pedestrian crossing means pedestrians have right of way. and cars have to stop for us. the big yellow signs mean open your eyes people!

we had yummy home made pizza tonight. ham, capsicum, olives, pineapple, onion and cheese. good combo. good job us.
sydney water has incompetent contractors, allegedly. (does that cover me for defamation?)
i went and checked the meter this morning for what it was up to, and the reading they did last Thursday was about 80 KL higher than what it reads now. that's quite a misread.
so they will send a new bill.
not impressed.
now i'm worried i've misread. might go check it again. now it almost seems like we haven't used enough water over the last three months!
