tipping etiquette

what do you think? should we tip waitstaff in australia? if so, how much is acceptable or reasonable? if not, why not?

i ask because of lunch today, and i disagreed with the way it went.

i hope the next few days bring much adventure, fun and good times.

i say 10%. but you should feel like you have to give anything. wait people in australia should get paid enough that they don't need tips. it's just a nice thank you for a job well done.

i always thought 10% was the general norm aswell

Here in the states we do about 15%... but, remember, it IS a tip, a reward for good service and, as Chris pointed out, a nice "thank you". I've always felt a tip should be a result of good service... but, that's just my Western view...

I'm all for the 10% if they've done a good job and the food wasn't already a rip off. If the service sucks or the food is already expensive, I think 0% is fair.

I think if you have to tip, well then if we get bad service we should get 10% back

10% but only if the food/service was really good, or you stayed longer than usual without ordering anything extra.
